Primarily I am a painter and I have used model making – both physical models and computer generated ones – as the basis for creating paintings for many years. Recently I have begun to animate the models themselves, and the video ‘Levels’ is a result of this work. I think of the scenes as being 3D paintings, with a rolling camera shot through each scene.
To create each scene I start by painting small pieces of paper with acrylic paint to create textures, and then scan these into a computer. I then build a model in the computer using the scanned textures and finally use this model as the source image for one of my paintings on canvas, or in this case for an animation.
The title ‘Levels’ relates to the fact that much of my work originates in my interest in virtual and fictional spaces. I often think of my paintings as picturing levels from a non-existent computer game. Architectural spaces, computer games and photographic realism all play a part in my paintings. My work pictures something expansive and concrete, conjured up from fictional environments, sketches and photographs.
