Sacrifice of the Mushroom Kings is a CGI animated film, where popular video game characters search for their souls as they wander around buildings built during the gilded age of American capitalism. The film draws a myriad of references such as Wall Street, mythical animals, and hair products. Taking a comparative mythology approach to certain aspects from contemporary culture, the film aims to mediate basic oppositions such as good and evil, life and death, and reality and fantasy.
Monaghan’s video installations navigate the slippery divide between reality and fiction and commercialism and contemporary art. Subject matter in his work is iconic and wide-ranging; mythical animals, video games characters, Baroque architecture. He conflates these references into fantastical scenes seemingly from an alternate reality, where elements from contemporary culture coexist with an antiquated past. Both familiar and alien, his work plays with our desires, dreams and anxieties.
